ABOUT US

Amanda Anderson ND.

I grew up in a small town in West Virginia where I spent many hours exploring the outdoors with my dad and my friends and many hours being crafty with my mom.  My love of nature and creativity in addition to a deep faith in the body’s innate wisdom to heal led me to study naturopathic medicine and midwifery.  I have known that I wanted to deliver babies since I was 4 years old and have been formally attending births for over 3 years now.  My experiences in life, travel, and learning have shown me the value of working with families from the very beginning and as they continue to grow.

I studied Biology at James Madison University in Virginia with a focus on pre-medicine, zoology, and research.  Because I believe in living life holistically, I also studied dance and West African history and culture there.  I moved to lovely Portland to study Naturopathic medicine and midwifery at the National College of Natural Medicine

I use all kinds of tools to help my patients achieve their healthcare goals.  I especially gravitate towards working with botanicals, flower essences, being creative with exercise, dietary choices, and nutrition, and doing bodywork in the form of energy work, massage and gentle osseous manipulation.

I like to get outside as much as possible to go running, adventuring, singing, painting, knitting, spending time with my loving partner, Michael, and playing with kids (and adults!)  I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve what you know is possible.

Growing up in Seattle, WA I have always been acutely aware of the natural world around me. In my early teen years I became interested in environmental issues, healthy eating and conscious living and began to learn more about natural health. While attending the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, I earned a Bachelor of Science, with an emphasis in pre-med and nutrition. It was at Evergreen that I became interested in different natural health modalities, completed an independent contract titled “Nutrition in Lactation” and realized I wanted to become a naturopathic doctor.   Many of my friends also began having babies around this time and I was introduced to the world of homebirth and midwifery. After reading “Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina Mae Gaskin and learning of The Farm Midwives during my travels across the country, I knew I had to add midwifery to my repertoire. I went on to earn a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine and certificate of Naturopathic Midwifery at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR and also completed an additional two year apprenticeship in midwifery.  I am licensed as a Naturopathic Physician in the state of Oregon, which in conjunction with my additional certificate and training, also allows me to practice natural childbirth in a home based setting.

My passion is to provide outstanding, holistic health care for the entire family, with special attention to children and midwifery.  I treat each patient as an individual and enjoy using herbs, homeopathy, nutrition, and lifestyle counseling to help you achieve your wellness goals. I believe strongly in the body’s intuitive ability to birth and heal naturally and support these processes through my education, experience and intuition.  My personal journey with midwifery and pediatrics was deeply inspired by the homebirths of my six year old son Jaden and daughter Freya born fall of2007, both of whom have taught me much insight and wisdom.  When not practicing, I enjoy being with my friends and family, cooking, sewing, gardening, knitting, camping, celebrating, being in nature, music, art and my dogs.
